Sun rays enter through the little gap of the window which is not covered by my purple curtain, signalling that it is another day of hell. As I stare at the ceiling of my room, colours switch around and play with my vision; red, blue, green, and purple. The light makes me dizzy. Looking to my right, my broken antique alarm clock stays stuck at nine. I don’t think I need to replace it any time soon. I wake up to my queen-sized bed with no companion for he has left me, leaving me with our daughter; Eileen. A high-pitched shriek rings and it no longer surprises me. It is a routine now. The shriek is my daily alarm. Not bothering to change my silk night gown, I drag myself out of my dark room. Immediately I am in the hallway towards the exit of my apartment. A white envelope with official government seal seems to have been delivered. Retrieving it, I never mind the formality letter for what I need is the money inside. I drop the envelope and letter in a rubbish bin beside the shoe rack and keep the money in my yellow sling purse I hang on the wooden hanger right beside the rubbish bin.
Suddenly the back of my head twinges, causing me to lose my balance and lean onto the wall. Groaning as I endure the throbbing pain, I slowly gain back my balance. This headache is starting to get annoying. Another shriek comes from Eileen’s room which is just next to my room. Her seventh birthday is coming soon but surely it will not be any special day for her. Every day will be the same horrid day. Sound of items being thrown is audible and I am accustomed to her daily fight with P and M; creatures visible only to her. “Aliens!” She shouts. So, it is alien this time. What name will she give? “Get away from me, Coco!” So, it is Coco. “Stop shouting, P!” Eileen continues. Reaching to her door which is locked from outside, my head spins another round of merry-go-round. I will need my medicine after I deal with Eileen. “Eileen? May I come in?” I knock on the door as I ask. “No! Go away, all of you! Go away, S!” She shouts. It has been three years since she started calling me S. She started calling me that from when her father hit her and left us. I unlock the door and enter only to receive a headbutt from Eileen which hits my stomach. Quickly, I hold onto her wrists and seal her movement. She struggles but a child like her can’t win over an adult’s strength. “Go away!” “Eileen, Wake up. The others are gone. It is just you and me.” I attempt to placate her. “Eileen, listen!” Suddenly she stops her rage and turns her head in slow motion to look at me blankly. Her cheeks lift up as she smiles sweetly. Abruptly, she raises her leg and sends a kick towards my face as she drops her whole body to the floor. “Green creature!! Green!” She continues. “Eileen, wake up!” My head feels like a dynamite exploding as my chin receives all hits from Eileen. Eileen, wake up! My voice echoes in my mind, making my dizziness worse. My vision shakes and Eileen does not seem to be stopping either. Abruptly pulling her into my arms, I embrace her tight. However, I do not know she is hiding something. The next thing that happens, is me getting stabbed at my side by a pen. Groaning due to the piercing pain caused by Eileen. It gets worse when my headache returns. “Why?” With all strength I can muster, I question Eileen’s action and she responses with something absurd. “You have to wake up. P will come back soon so you have to leave or else he will kill you this time.” For once in a blue moon, Eileen looks sober and normal. Her eyes look alive and she is interacting with me which she never does. “Who is P?” Eileen looks hesitant to tell. She looks downward as she ponders. “Do you see colours?” Indeed, I see colours making transition from red to orange and to yellow and other colours as well. I drop my head to make a nod. “Papa is coming.” Eileen hurries to my side and pulls out the pen. Screaming in pain as I look at the wound, I see blue liquid oozing out. “Wake up, S!” Amidst the strikes, my ears pick up the sound of door being opened. It sounds like it comes from the entrance to this apartment. Someone is coming. “Self, you have to wake up!” Eileen shouts before she stabs the pen to my neck forcefully. Falling backward onto the floor, I see a man above me. He gave a sinister look. His cold stare makes me tremble, my eyes start to water and my breathing stops. “P-papa.” I mumble. He raises a foot above my face and steps on it. My consciousness fades from the impact and I wish I died. “—leen!” A voice rings, sending a coldness course down my spine. I do not want to open my eyes. I can taste leather belt in my mouth. My arms and feet are hurting and I cannot move them. “Her schizophrenia is getting worse. We can only control her by tying her down and giving her an injection to calm her down.” A familiar voice of a man rings. It is my doctor. “Eileen! Are you awake?” Opening my eyes, I see my mother by my side with her usual worried face. Her hair seems slightly in disarray. I must have done something bad to her when I was calming ‘Eileen’. She removes the leather belt from my mouth as she sighs in relief. Looking towards the doctor, I cry. “Why am I alive?”
