Previously, I wrote about how I wanted to produce something positive from something negative and that I made a photo-book project with my friends which is inspired by my own insecurities in symbolism. Here is how it went Image by Khai The planning for the project actually started months ago. I discussed it with the photographer, Alvin, and he agreed helping with it because he was interested with the concept. Things did not start picking up pace until I suffered a huge break down and I thought this project could become something meaningful to me and friends involved. I contacted Alvin immediately and asked if he was available for the project. Our first photo-shoot was on 11th of March and I had prepared whatever that was needed. Alvin told me to sketch down the ideas but I was caught with college assignments that I forgot about it. I thought it would work fine with the ideas in my head which proved me wrong on the day of the session. Mostly, it was because Alvin was so professional in his job. I did not expect him to be such a perfectionist. To take one scene, it took approximately 20 minutes. He just had to get the lighting right. This is not a sarcasm at all (laughs). He was really dedicated and determined in photography that I was amazed and so dumb-founded that I forgot a huge chunk of the ideas in my head. In the end we only took 1/3 of the ideas I had. Although we only got 1/3 of the concept, we got amazing photos in 3 hours. I would say we did a great job. Khai and Edward also came to help with the reflector, panel and behind-the-scenes. We enjoyed ourselves throughout the time. I was supposed to feel gloomy but they made the day sunny that it was a bit difficult to get into mood. On 25th March, we arranged another photo-session to turn the ideas into images. The time I got after the first session made me think carefully how I should project the ideas. I managed to reserve time to sketch them and ponder about the setting and all.
I scrapped my old idea which was a bit bland and changed the concept into something better. I took the black dress I had (originally for Miku Hatsune cosplay but since there are still details to be fixed I thought it would be a waste to not wear it), and added some accessories to give a different feel to it. I got into the dress in the morning before makeup and I realized that I had gotten fatter. The dress embraced me so tightly that it was almost suffocating. Good thing was that the dress still could be loosened at the back. I thank the designer and seamstress for the convenience. The dress also covered my belly so I don’t feel that bad about my fats. The first few shots were extremely tricky to get. We had to, of course, set the lighting and then time the rose petals. There were many failed shots but we finally got what we wanted. The red rose petals looked very gorgeous with the black background. The rose petals made photos great because of the color contrast. It was tricky but we are glad that we managed to get what we wanted. Khai and the attendant from Bluemoon Studios worked hard for this. Thank you so much! Edward came later due to circumstances at his home. Still, he came to fulfill his promise and helped with the concept. He is featured in one of the scenes! In another scene, Khai is also featured! Both scenes turned out well, I am glad to have you guys! The photo-shoot lasted from 1-4 PM and we managed to cover pretty much everything. I turned from a princess or female grim-reaper (as Khai described) to an ordinary auntie in sweater. We went for dinner and a chat before we went home. Khai and I talked a bit about the photo-session as I ran through the behind-the-scenes. I realized then that we forgot an important scene which I forgot to sketch. We had all tools ready too! What a shame! Perhaps, it means another project is on its way sometime in the future! Let’s hope so. I can’t wait to see the results. I saw the taken photos and they are absolutely well-taken. They also fit the concept. I hope those who buy it will appreciate the efforts we made and most importantly, I hope children who will receive the donations can buy books or clothes that they want. Hopefully this project can give some comfort and encouragement to them!
