An event consisted of two talk shows was held by BNMC (Bina Nusantara Mandarin Club) on 3rd of June 2017 concerning malnutrition and child abuse. It was held in Alam Sutra Bina Nusantara’s auditorium from 11 a.m until 3 p.m. The Project Manager, Kelvin Lu, expressed his concern on the cases of malnutrition and child abuse in his opening speech. He also mentioned how ethnic does not matter when it comes to humanity. “Will we stay still or will we take action to help?” He said before closing his speech. Before entering the talk show session, two MCs introduced three singers to sing and lift the atmosphere. After that, the MC introduced the moderator, an English literature student, Tanrio Sophia Virginia and invited her on the stage. The moderator introduced herself as well as making a greeting in mandarin, Japanese and English before inviting the first speaker, Mrs. Jee Hyun Rah, to join her on the stage. Taking the provided seats, the moderator and guest speaker began with a chit-chat about guest speaker’s background. Mrs. Jee Hyun Rah came from South Korea and had been travelling according to the necessity of her profession as the Chief Nutrition in UNICEF. She is currently working for UNICEF Indonesia in dealing with malnutrition cases. Mrs. Jee Hyun Rah shared her concern that it was odd that there were people who could not fulfil their nutrition doses especially in developing countries. She also briefly explained what UNICEF’s role in tackling malnutrition issue in Indonesia. According to her, Indonesia’s government was very committed in handling the cases. She was also optimistic about Indonesia’s success in reducing malnutrition. She said according to data there was a decrease of malnutrition percentage. Malnutrition was often mistaken with simply starvation. Mrs. Jee Hyun Rah then elaborated that malnutrition was not just hunger but it concluded symptoms such as conspicuous bones surfacing on skin and bulging belly. She stated three main reasons to why malnutrition happened; children’s high demand of nutrition with small capacity (body size), how parents fulfil their nutrition and government’s involvement. Malnutrition in Indonesia set place in the top five around the world and it was creating questions because Indonesia’s economy had been growing rapidly for the past decade. The talk ended in approximately an hour and the guest speaker was given a bouquet of appreciation before she returned to her seat. Unfortunately, Mrs. Jee Hyun Rah seemed to leave once her turn was finished. The second talk show revolved around the topic of child abuse. Mr. R. Michael Morrison grew up close to gangsters and crooks in Us where he came from. He stated that he noticed his passion when he met children in human-trafficking and he could not help them.
Typically, children were prone to abuse from their direct family instead of strangers. Strangers, according to Mr. Michael, did not really abuse children even if they did, the percentage stayed below the percentage of abuse by family. It included verbal abuse and physical abuse. Mr. Michael elaborated on the effects on how verbal abuse gave deeper impression than physical abuse. Words that came out could damage children’s self-esteem and it could disable children from forming good relations with other people. Men were mostly the abusers, Mr. Michael said. He also emphasized that it would always be the abusers’ fault and never the victims’ fault. In order to be able to end the abuse, confrontation played an important role. If an abuse was seen, friends or family should step in and stop it. As the founder of Kepompong, Mr. Michael explained that they were different than any other charity group or community. They would accept donation but they would not ask for it. It was due to an experience Mr. Michael had when he met children from human-trafficking. The child asked him why he was begging for money when he told them not to do that. They did not spread flyers or banners with children’s devastated photos. What abused children needed was trust, love and accompany. Of course, they needed their education, medication, and basic survival requirements. Lastly, Mr. Michael advised that youngsters take part in helping children in need. “The community does not need more me. They need diversity of mind. People from business, engineering and even literature.” He said. Ending the conversation with appreciation bouquet and photo session, the moderator seemed surprised when the MCs announced that she would be receiving a bouquet and appreciation certificate as well as a goodie bag. Lastly, the event was entertained with a solo dance performance before the MCs made their closing and said farewell to the audience.
