Cosplay is derived from 'costume and play'. It is an activity where people dress up just like characters from manga (Japanese comic), Japanese animation, and other variety of other fictional entertainment. Although cosplay is still a fairly new culture to the world and there is part of society that still sees cosplay with sinister look. Cosplay is positive if you do it positively. Of course, there are negative impacts from cosplaying which does not appropriately suit morality. I feel more of the positivity than the negativity. Cosplay was the reason I found my confidence and self-esteem. Personally, I think cosplay is the same as drama or stage-play because you take on a role and you work your best for it. Except, in cosplay, you don't really have to make a skit and perform on stage. Here are the points how cosplay liberated me from my complex. Cosplay is fun! Image Via - TakaShinReisa 1. I Learn How to Care for Myself When we talk about cosplay, the first thing you notice will be the makeup. Everyone is pretty (unless the character portrayed is from horror game then...it's a different story. I used to care 0% about my looks and obviously I did not indulge myself into skincare. Through cosplay, I learned how to take care of myself. I learn the type of skin I have, which is oily with acne, I treat it with suitable cosmetic products. At the same time, I also learn how to love myself in the process. 2. Finding New Friends! I was bullied in the past because of my interest in cosplaying but it is no longer important because I found new, open-minded friends through cosplay community. We make promises to meet during event and we enjoy the time in the event. There were countless beautiful moments I have had ever since I moved to Jakarta. There are a lot of laughter! I could not even stay stoic while cosplaying Mikasa with my friends (I love you guys). Due to my past, I have low self-esteem in meeting new people but because of cosplay, I no longer fear it. People in cosplay community just help each other out and it is the best of all! Image Via - Frea Mai 3. Be Who You Aspire to Be Don't we all love characters we get to know through movies, comics or tv series? And most of the time, we are given motivation and we want to be just as positive as they are. Sometimes, we are tired of being ourselves. That's when cosplay comes in. Through cosplay, albeit only a while, you can stop being yourself and be someone else. I cosplayed Mikasa Ackerman from Shingeki no Kyojin because she is strong and confident; she does whatever she believes in. Things would not have worked the same in the real world for us. I believe this is the most liberating part of cosplaying. You can strip all roles pushed onto you by the society and be someone else. 4. A Lot of Great Photos Other than taking a role like drama and stage-play, cosplayers learn how to pose. Professional or not, we all learn how to get into the atmosphere through photo-session and we come up with concept for the session. As the result, we get a lot of great photos. For me, this is ultimately self-satisfaction. As someone who has been in stage-plays, I feel proud of myself when I manage to pull off the right expression for the photo concept. 5. You Learn Many Things There are many skills that define a professional cosplayer. Starting from taking the role of a character, hair styling, makeup, craftmanship, sewing, modeling/posing, stage mastering (for performances), photography and editing. For people who work hard on the skills, there are competitions almost every month! There is even global cosplay competition called World Cosplay Submit held annually. There are just so many things you can learn from a senior! I have learned plenty (but not enough) from WCS 2016 champion, Frea Mai and Rian Cyd. I am looking forward to chances to learn from them! I am also particularly impressed with TakaShinReisa who came from Bali and is extremely talented. Everything is done perfectly that I have no idea where to start, but one thing is for certain. I would like to get closer and learn plenty, especially in makeup. Perhaps, I could specially write an article about these three idols of mine one day! Here are some of my cosplay photos I'd love to share. 1. Midare Toushirou from Touken Ranbu - Photog: Wylie
