Psychoanalysis analyse the disorder in the characters of a literature work. Everything that is out of order in the story or in the characters is subject of research and it applies to mentality of the protagonist. Frankie and Alice will be used as an object of analysis in this paper with theories of Sigmund Freud. Frankie and Alice tells about personality disorder in the protagonist, Frankie, a black woman who works as an exotic dancer in a club. Frankie forgets many things and has many black outs. She ends up in mental hospital because she wants to escape crime charges for being aggressive and because she does not have money to survive. With the help of Dr. Oz she is submitted and cared under government expenses. Consequently, Dr. Oz found a disorder in her. Using sedative and hypnosis, Dr. Oz found that there are multiple personalities in Frankie; a smart kid called 'genius' and a racist white woman, Alice. Freud expresses three theories that consider character's necessity or whims, ego and super ego. In the story, Frankie deals with a repressed trauma and she needs help with that. She used to be servant of a white family. The young master of the family, Pete, develops romantic feelings and they attempted to run away. A car accident ensued and killed Pete. After the accident, Frankie lived her life taking care of the child in her womb. However, the child did not survive the delivery process either it died or Frankie's mother murdered it. Due to the repressed trauma, Frankie develops personalities to protect her from the trauma. Genius and Alice are there to prevent her from remembering. They appear when there is a trigger to the horrible memory. That is why Frankie gets black outs. Super ego is all about morality. Super ego of Frankie is significant when she gets aggressive and assaults a man she is about to make love with, and injures a man at Paige's (Pete’s sister) wedding as well as choking a nurse in the hospital. From those three factors, it is evident that Frankie has Dissociative Identity Disorder. Her alter egos appear when there is a reminder of her trauma. She has been repressing the trauma unconsciously and it causes her to have such disorder.
