(This post is spoiler-free.) Flash of Wind is an on-going Japanese comic taking Edo period as the setting. It focuses on a fourteen years old girl disguising as a boy who volunteers into a military organization called Shinsengumi in the Capital of Kyoto to take revenge for her deceased father. Her older brother used to enroll in Shinsengumi as a soldier before he passed away. Even though the protagonist, Sei, lives her life as a boy, she meets various troubles and problems that almost expose her identity as a girl. As she deals with each trouble, she finds love; Okita Souji Captain of First Unit. Along with Okita's help, Sei covers her identity as a woman. Flash of Wind describes the cultural and historical situation of Edo period well in Kyoto. It is educational at one side and it is also comedic how the author depicts relations between characters. Flash of Wind also goes according to the history chronological order during that period. It also provides extra information at the end of each volume such as lanterns, ancient candle, time system, etiquette of possessing a sword, etc. The negative point is that, Flash of Wind is made for girls, focusing on how Sei lives as a girl inside and a boy outside. Boys do not really find it interesting. The art is also quite old-fashioned and it might not appear attractive to some readers who have preferences. It can be a fair reference for same theme as long as readers can differ between fiction and non-fiction. Readers who particularly like japanese culture or history might find this interesting with all the details and historical references. Left: Protagonist, Kamiya Seizaburou a.k.a Sei
Right: Protagonist, Okita Souji and the love interest of Sei in the series
