Fun Facts Shinsengumi Members Shinsengumi was an organization under the sponsorship of Aizu Clan during the Bakumatsu Period in Japan. They were consisted of men who strived to become samurai, retainers of Shogun. They were peasants and they did it as a form of patriotism and nationalism to their beloved motherland. They, too, had sides. He would often visit the red district and acquainted himself with women during off-duty. Although he was not handsome, he had a straight personality which appealed to the women. His official wife, however, stayed in Edo with his son. He was known to have redeemed two Tayuu sisters. 2. Hijikata Toshizo's and Picked Radish Image Via - curazy.com How are both related? Pickled radish, apparently, was Hijikata's Toshizo's favorite food. He was even rumoured to bring a whole bucket of it back to the headquarters. 3. Okita Souji and Alcohol Okita Souji was known to eat little and drank alcohol plenty which was probably the reason to his thin build. He was not fond of eating. This was also the reason why he couldn't win against tuberculosis. 4. Nagakura Shinpachi with Geiko Image Via - Kickstarter It was not a secret that Nagakura Shinpachi had a child with a geiko he acquainted for a while. Due to the inability to care for the child because he was marching to war, he sent money to the wet-nurse. 5. Murdering a Hatamoto Saitou Hajime, the famous Captain of Third Unit in Shinsengumi, was challenged to a death match by a Hatamoto, a high ranking samurai when he was at the age of 18. It turned out badly because Saitou murdered the Hatamoto. Saitou had to escape and changed his name. 6. Failed Seppuku Image Via - Futurism Harada Sanosuke had a straight scar on his abdomen from a failed seppuku/harakiri(a ritual to honorably kill one's self). He was ridiculed when he was young that he couldn't do harakiri. So, he did it but fortunately, he failed and survived. 7. A High Ranking Samurai's Son Due to his family name 'Todou', he was rumoured to be a high ranking samurai's son. However, Heisuke never clarified it. When people talked about it, he would just casually joke about it without giving any truth to the rumour. 8. It was said that when he walked down Gion, women would turn their heads to see him due to his handsomeness. He was the military councilor of Shinsengumi and he also taught literature.
