Now before you say anything such as, "But constructing a world or a universe is much more harder!" I would like to emphasize that writing generally is not easy. It is a game of mind and pen! It is true that constructing a world or a universe is difficult, but constructing a world based on known facts and mysteries? Oh boy, it will take the same efforts. When you construct your very own universe or world, you will have to remember every single rules that you have made. You need to recheck, and writers who write historical-fiction also need to recheck until their hair falls out to reach satisfaction (the season on my head is constant Fall). Let's just enjoy the process, aye? Image: Via Village of Clayton NY 1. You read PLENTY "But don't they say you need to read a lot to be able to write well?" Yes, however, my point here is that we, who write historical-fiction, do a lot of research. It is not just reading and taking a look of references. It is to find materials! Which era do we want to write, what about the culture, fashion, common conflict, etc (I even wondered if the Japanese had spoons back in Edo period! Tell me if you know). 2. You keep CHECKING ...and you get confused whether you are in the right track. The thing with historical-fiction is you want to try to get as close as possible to the facts. "But it is part fiction right? Why not go all out?" I understand what you mean, but what is the fun of going all out when you want to take a piece of the history as the romantic spice? I wrote a chapter for Autumn Crescent Moon and I had to check four times for the same thing(partly because I keep forgetting). You also need to make sure you don't get the facts wrong. 3. You play PUZZLE So, here you have your historical occurrences outline. Next thing to do is you fit your story so that it does not clash with the occurrences. You will have to cleverly plot your story so that the historical occurrences would have effect on your characters(you can choose which events, though!). 4. You get to know the PEOPLE When you write historical-fiction, you are bound to create characters based on real people. It is alright how you perceive this person's personality but you need to give a strong reason for an action. You wonder and you find details about the people; their hobbies, their family, their childhood, their favorite food, etc (like how I found out Hijikata was good in pounding mochi).
