I first knew cosplay when I was twelve or thirteen. All the cosplayers seemed sparkling and glimmering. I wanted to be like them, however, my parents were against it because it was 'weird' Photo: Ririchiyo (InuxBoku) Photographer: Johan Setiadi Just like any other newbies in cosplay community, I was clueless how I should tell my parents about my new interest and hobby. At first, I told them I wanted to visit Singapore because there was an event. I wanted them to see how beautiful and creative the community of cosplay was. However, what they saw was just 'weirdness' and 'differences'. I did all I could to be able to cosplay even if it meant cupboard cosplay. I did not have any courage to cosplay outside because my hometown was sort of conservative and nobody knew about cosplay. My only courage was my friend who I sort of dragged into photography. We had fun and it was all that mattered. My parents did all they could to convince that cosplay was not good and even resorting to say that religion also forbid it. I was angry that they had to go that far just to stop me from cosplaying. I attempted to talk it out but it was all in vain. They still refused. Little did they know that cosplay made me feel good about myself; it increased my self-esteem and it distracted me from all the abuse I received during school. Now that I live alone in Jakarta, I have come to love cosplay a lot; more than before. I met many friends who appreciate and understand me. I am having a lot more fun thant what I had previously. It is all because I did not give up on cosplaying and that I know I am not committing crime. Although my parents still do not agree, they have come to terms with me and my hobbies.
